Glass Defects

Surface of rough glass magnified to 20 micrometers.

Close up view of glass that has a rough surface.  This photo covers an area of about 20 micrometers.  A typical bacterium is 1 to 10 micrometers in length.  A strand of a spiders web silk is about 3 to 8 micrometers in thickness.  As you can see, some glass surfaces are rough; microscopically they have peaks and valleys.  This type of problem glass is more susceptible to hard water spots and dirt.  For example, you can have two window panes side by side that have been exposed with equal amounts dirt and outdoor elements but the one on the right is much easier to clean because the glass surface is smooth.

Glass scratches due to embedded silica particles.

Glass is made from silica sand.  Particles of metal and silica sand are sometimes embedded into glass during the manufacturing process.  These particles are often too small to be seen and during a construction clean process these particles can become dislodged.  Once these particles become dislodged they can scratch the glass.  Due to the repetitive scraping, scrubbing and buffing that is necessary for glass restoration, knowledge and experience are of the utmost importance during this process.
